How do your servers work?
Our servers are very dynamic. We will outline the important parts in this article.
What is a Hosting Volume?
A Hosting Volume is a disk on which files and directories (of Hosting Accounts that reside on it) are stored.
Our servers access these disks and retrieve the requested file(s) associated with a specific Hosting Account. Our FTP servers have been designed so you connect to your Hosting Account’s folder and upload files that will be displayed on your website.
It is important to note that a Hosting Volume is a not web server. If your website is down, we can almost always guarantee that it is not the Hosting Volume. Website downtimes are usually caused by an issue with the web server. The IP assigned to your Hosting Account is the easiest way to tell if a server is down.
If you experiencing issues with your website, please include all of the information you can. This includes the URL, IP, and Hosting Account Username. Issues with your website may be discussed on our Community Forum in the Hosting Support category.
How do your IP addresses work?
We can assign different IP addresses for any account, even if they are on the same Hosting Volume. Because we do not store your website files on our web servers, your account(s) can be moved to different IP addresses by accessing its Hosting Volume from a different server, which would have a different IP address.
What isn’t stored in a Hosting Volume?
Hosting Volumes don’t contain all of a Hosting Account’s material. Your databases, if any, are not stored on Hosting Volumes. They are stored on our database servers. This is why we do not use “localhost” as the database server.
How can I tell if the Hosting Volume is at fault?
Website files specifically are stored on Hosting Volumes, therefore if the Hosting Volume failed, a lot of things would go wrong for many users. These are some errors you may encounter in the browser if the Hosting Volume were down:
- “Connection Timed Out” (can vary)
- “Connection Refused” (can vary)
These are some errors you may encounter with FTP if the Hosting Volume were down:
- 421: No home directory accessable.
- “Connection timed out” after
PASScommand. - “Could not read line from socket” (Online File Manager only)
If you are experiencing problems in both of the above enviroments, it is most likely an issue with the Hosting Holume.
